New
national maps of the Democratic Republic of Congo In
January 2006, 3 maps of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been
published in paper and digital format at the 1:2 000 000 and 1:3 000 000. Funded
by the scientific belgian policy, the Fonds pour la formation dans
l'Industrie et dans l'Agriculture (FRIA), as well as our own funds, these 3
new national maps have been officially handed to the congolese government at Kinshasa the 14 of March 2006 and at Tervuren
( Based on
several fruitfull collaborations and recent scientific progress in remote
sensing, the Research Laboratory in Environmetrics and Geomatics of the
Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL-Geomatics) compiled all the
available cartographic data over the RDCongo territory. The existing digital
data have been checked, updated, enhanced based on available sources and
integrated in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Original information
have been also produced combining the more recent techniques of earth
observation and field knowledge of numerous national and international
experts. The general map, published at
the 1 : 2 000 000 scale, includes all the basic information including roads,
cities and villages, lakes and rivers, infrastructures, as a support for the
national politicies in several domains. The land cover
map, published at the 1 : 3 000 000 scale, presents the current land use
of the territory as well as the diversity of existing vegetation types. An explanatory note (in French)
describe the land cover classes and the seasonality of each vegetation type. It
also introduces the data and the methodology developped to realize the map. The
files corresponding to these maps can be directly visualised through a web
interface or downloaded in digital format. These files are the property of
the Research Laboratory in Environmetrics and Geomatics and can not be
reproduced or distributed without authorization. All publications derived
from these data have to mention the following reference: "General map of

the map of the
World Heritage sites and protected areas, published at the 1 : 2 000
000 scale, presents the parks and reserves of the DRC with the general map as
background in order to inform and increase the public awareness with the
natural heritage of the country. The land
